5 Chic Ways to Wear Skirts in the Fall

As the weather gets colder, we usually find ourselves reaching more and more for pants. It’s not that we don’t love our skirts; it’s just that we haven’t always been sure how to style them in the fall…until now. We did a little research to find five simple ways to take this spring and summer staple well into autumn.

The easiest way to transition warmer-weather skirts to fall? By wearing them atop tights, of course. A fun printed mini you wore with bare legs and sandals in the spring and summer gets new life when paired with super-dark tights. You can also vary the tights’ thickness depending on how cold it is—meaning, with the right, fleece-lined tights, you can totally still wear your shortest hemlines well into the season.

WEAR KNEE-LENGTH SKIRTS WITH TALL BOOTS

Well, this is fun. If you’re not so into tights but your skirt’s still on the shorter side, pair it with tall boots, allowing for a small sliver of skin to peek out. You could wear tights under said boots, of course, but we love the way this subtle flash of leg looks.

WEAR PENCIL SKIRTS WITH CHUNKY KNITS AND COZY JACKETS

If you’re keeping the bottom more spring-y with a knee-length skirt, balance it out with a decidedly autumnal top. Since the skirt is slim-fitting, it’s perfectly fine to pair it with an oversized knit and ultra-comfy teddy-bear coat.

WEAR MIDI SKIRTS OVER TALL BOOTS

Our ideal fall outfit, right this way. When you cover the tops of your boots with a beautiful midi, the resulting look is sophisticated and polished. Something else to keep in mind when wearing skirts in the fall: Heavier materials like wool and suede ensure that you’ll stay warm and look seasonally appropriate.

WEAR PASTEL PIECES WITH TOUGHER JACKETS

This pleated pale pink skirt is too pretty to keep in your closet all fall and winter, so don’t. When wearing pieces in traditionally summery prints and colors, mix and match them with edgier accents—in this case, a gorgeous leather moto jacket.
